Our curriculum offer seeks to follow the National Curriculum prioritising emotional wellbeing alongside academic achievements in order to meet the individual needs of our pupils, this is exemplified by the curriculum equipping pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
Also, the curriculum is strategically planned to scaffold the skills required to make successful progress demonstrated through clearly outlining a range of unique geographical skills which are incorporated into each half term. Pupils will build on their knowledge of globes, maps and atlases and apply and develop this knowledge routinely in the classroom and in the field. They will interpret Ordnance Survey Maps in the classroom and field, focusing on grid references and scale, topographical mapping and aerial and satellite photos. They will also utilise GIS to view, analyse and interpret places. In addition, they will conduct fieldwork in contrasting locations to collect, analyse and draw conclusions from geographical data.
We strive to enthuse and prepare our young people for the wider world to develop the skills imperative to our pupils’ ability to cope in the wider world and their ability to sustain employment. This is incorporated through allowing pupils to examine important geographical subject content which will embed deep knowledge of the wider world. Through exploring these topics, pupils will gain and develop a variety of skills, which will allow them to broaden their knowledge of the world around them.
A knowledge-engaged curriculum is promoted and facilitated through exploration of key geographical topics. Pupils will consolidate and extend their knowledge of the world’s major countries and their physical and human features. They will develop an understanding of how geographical processes interact to create distinctive human and physical landscapes and how they change over time. In doing so, they will become aware of increasingly complex geographical systems in the world around them.
Our ambition for all pupils, is to be given opportunities that will offer them the best understanding of how to be successful in 21st Century Britain.; we prioritise communication and literacy skills in every lesson using a variety of different resources which develop pupils literacy skills. This ranges from reading comprehension, writing tasks, debates and a strong use of ELKLAN authorised resources.
Cultural capital is provided through a programme of off-site visits and experiences: such as visits to the Peak District, the River Mersey and the City of Manchester/Liverpool.
We strive to ensure our young people are developing the skills and knowledge they need to make and implement informed and aspirational career decisions, throughout their working life. We do so through developing their skills and knowledge, which works alongside our careers programme, to enable pupils to make informed decisions regarding their future after they complete their education here.
We pride ourselves on our high expectations of what our young people can achieve, this is celebrated through allowing our pupils to gain the necessary skills and knowledge which could be further extended through undertaking the GCSE Geography which is a national qualification, recognised by colleges and employers.
